Dr Mikao Usui was a respected Christian minster and when asked one of his students..."How did Jesus heal" he decided to go on a spiritual journey to find some answers and went up into the mountains.
While he was climbing Mt Kurama a sacred mountain in Japan on his 21 day healing mission he collected a stone so he could keep track of time. By the time he picked up the 20th stone and still he felt his prayers hadn't been answered he was just about to give up hope. That evening however he stood contemplating his next move and praying for answers and looked up to see a ball of light racing towards him. He was just about to jump out of its way but was held to the spot by a force and the ball struck him between the eyes.
A vision was relayed to him that showed all the ancient Tibetan writings that he had for so long tried to understand and couldn't. These became the Reiki symbols we use today. It was from this enlightening moment that Dr Usui dedicated the rest of his life to Reiki teaching many others about the powerful healing art which he had practiced successfully on his own ailments and the ailments of the poor and needy.

After Dr Usui's Death Hayashi officially became the leader of the Reiki movement and went on to train other Reiki Masters. In those days to be a Reiki practitioner you had to be chosen by the masters and had to promise to use Reiki daily. You also had to put a lot of volunteer work into the Reiki Clinic that Hayashi founded.
It was Dr Hayashi that developed certain hand positions for full coverage of the organs and body. Dr Hayashi became aware war was approaching and he knew he would be called up for duty and be would then be responsible for the deaths of others. This was something that haunted him and sadly on May 10th 1940 he committed suicide.

Mrs Hawayo Takato became a patient of Dr Hayashi clinic in the 1930's after she had an illness and was told in a vision that there was no operation necessary. She had asked after the treatment was successful that she be initiated as a Reiki Practitioner but because she was a foreigner Hayashi declined her. However after his death he passed the leadership of Reiki over to Mrs Takato.
It was Mrs Takata that introduced Reiki to the western would and she practiced it right up until her death in 1980.
When Mrs. Takata one of the first Reiki Masters begun her healing she was not charging for the treatments and she found that some of her clients didn't seem to value the technique and often took a while to recover from their ailment.
She meditated on this as she knew that Reiki had healed her from her illnesses and many others that she and Dr Hayashi had administered healing to. During this meditation it was revealed to her that she should charge for her services and so the tradition for charging for Reiki treatments was reinforced.
